[Jujutsu Kaisen] The death of Yuji itadori! What are the conditions for resurrection and coming back to life?

This article explains the death of the main character of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji Itadori, the conditions under which he is resurrected, the circumstances behind his death in the first place, and the scene in which he dies again in the battle with Yuta Okkotsu.

The main character of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji Itadori, really dies early in the story.

Although it was expected that he would come back to life, it was a surprise that he died early on in the story.

[Jujutsu Kaisen] The death scene of Yuji Itadori! (manga volume 1 chapter 5, anime episode 3)

The the death flag of Yuji is raised as soon as Megumi Fushikuro and Nobara Kugisaki appeared on the scene.

Let’s start with the first scene where Yuji Itadori is flagged for death.

Incidentally, the timing of the death of the main character, just as he is about to die, was partly due to behind the scene of Jujutsu Kaisen.

A curse equivalent to a special grade appears in the reformatory.

Just after the debut battle as a shaman of Yuji Itadori and Nobara Kugisaki is over, and everyone is going to go out for dinner, there is a kinky trend.

A huge object like a fetus appeared in the sky above a Juvenile Training School, and even non-shamans could see it.

It flew into the reformatory and the potentially high-grade vengeful ghost inside started to rampage.

Yuji Itadori was about to die.

The name of this special grade cursed spirit is unknown at this point, and the magic technical college, which received the report of its appearance, will be responsible for dealing with it.

Incidentally, at the end of the 5th episode of the 1st volume of the manga, there was a death flag that was all too obvious.

In fact, just before the appearance of this cursed spirit, there was a scene that reminded us of the death of Yuji Itadori, as shown in the image above.

At this point, it was expected that the battle with this spirit would result in the death of Yuji.

A curse which eats Sukuna’s finger appears at the reformatory.

In the 6th episode of the 1st volume of the manga(the 4th episode of the anime), Yuji Itadori and his allies are on a mission to rescue people left behind in a reformatory when they come face to face with a special-grade curse.

At this point, Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki were no match for the curses, so Yuji took on the role of decoy.

While Yuji was holding back the curses, Fushiguro and Kugisaki escaped from the reformatory, and Yuji switched bodies with Sukuna at that time.

The mission at the reformatory was full of flags of death for Yuji.

But halfway through, Yuji was replaced by Sukuna and the special grade curse was somehow managed.

But this time, Sukuna itself became a threat, and Fushiguro, who was waiting outside the reformatory, had to deal with it.

In the 8th chapter of the 2nd volume of the manga (the 4th episode of the anime), the battle against the special-grade curses turned the tables the moment Yuji switched places with Sukuna.

Though Sukuna is also ranked as ‘special-grade’, Sukuna is so much stronger than normal Special-grade, that even the curses that Yuji and Megumi couldn’t get rid of, were beaten easily.

And then he slaughtered them in pieces with his domain expansion,”Demonic Feretory“.

 

As soon as the battle was over, you’d expect Yuji to regain his body, but as he had switched places with Sukuna without any binding contract, it took his a while to regain control of his body, and Sukuna was free for a while.

Megumi Fushiguro escaped from the reformatory with Nobara Kugisaki, and after missing Nobara, rushed to the scene again.

There, he encountered Sukuna’s manifestation of Yuji Itadori, and the battle began on the spot.

 

Here, Sukuna takes out his own heart and throws it away, so that Yuji could not come out.

By doing this, if Yuji were to regain control of his body badly, he would die at that moment, and so Sukuna has taken Yuji’s own life hostage.

 

Though Sukuna could live without his heart, his fighting power would be reduced.

So Megumi challenged Sukuna with all his might, making his think ‘I can’t win without regenerating my heart’, and tried to save him by regenerating his heart.

But Sukuna is too strong and that won’t happen either.

Yuji dies at the same time as he is replaced by Sukuna.

Even with the full force of Megumi Fushiguro’s power, Sukuna didn’t falter, and Megumi tried to summon a shikigami, Mahoraga,  in exchange for his life.

But at that moment, Yuji regained control of his body.

He knew that his own heart had not yet regenerated, but he switched places with Sukuna to prevent Sukuna from rampaging any further.

To regain control of his body without a heart would mean death, but he was prepared for that, wasn’t he?

And at the end of the 5th chapter of the 1st volume of the manga, as the flag ‘one is dead’, Yuji Itadori died here.

[Jujutsu Kaisen] Death and Resurrection of Yuji Itadori! What is the condition for coming back to life? (vol.2, chapter 11, Anime episode 6)

In the next volume after the start of the main story, the main character died in a rage, but Yuji Itadori was not completely dead yet.

Fortunately, Sukuna was inside of him, and even though his heart is gone, he is still in a condition to revive.

Then, inside Sukuna’s territory, Yuji had a talk with Sukuna.

In the 10th-11th chapter of volume 2 of the manga, there is a description of Yuji Itadori talking with Sukuna in weird place.

The place is filled with the bones of countless creatures, and the ceiling is covered with the backbone and ribs of huge creatures.

It’s like the inside of a creature’s belly that has become nothing but bones, but this is the innate realm of Sukuna.

It is here that Tsuina proposes to Yuji Itadori a certain contract.

Sukuna offers a condition to come back to life to the deceased Yuji Itadori

As it was a situation where Sukuna could come back to life if she wanted to, Sukuna offered Yuji Itadori some conditions for his revival.

The second one, ‘to forget this promise’, is the secret of this contract, but at this point, the true aim is not clear.

 

And Yuji was about to accept this contract, but then he beats up Sukuna and demands, “Bring me back to life with no conditions.”.

Then Sukuna proposes, “Let’s kill each other. If you win, I’ll do it with no conditions. If I win, I’ll bring us back to life under my “contract”.“.

To this new condition, the moment Yuji said “Fine”, his head was chopped from the middle, and he was half forced to accept Sukuna’s condition.

Yuji Itadori was revived

Just as Shoko Ieiri is about to dissect Yuji’s body, he wakes up, with surprising Satoru Gojo, Kiyotaka Ijichi and Shoko.

When Gojo says “Welcome back”, Yuji says “Yo, I’m back”, a light greeting for someone who had died, and gives him a high five.

This is how Yuji experienced death and rebirth in such a short period of time, dying shortly after the start of the story and coming back to life shortly afterwards.

[Jujutsu kaisen] The reason for the death of Yuji Itadori is to avoid being cancelled?

This development, in which the main character dies just as the main members Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushikuro, and Kugisaki Nozara appear, is actually related to the fact that Jujutsu Kaisen was a candidate for cancellation.

Jujutsu Kaisen is now a worldwide hit, but in the early days of the series, it was not popular, and it was one of the least popular manga series in Weekly Shonen Jump.

It is said that due to such circumstances, the shocking performance of “the death flag of the main character” was added as soon as the series started.

At the time of the serialization, “dark style” that is the main feature of Jujutsu Kaisen was not popular with the readership of Weekly Shonen Jump, and it seems that it was struggling at the beginning of the serialization.

 

So, not only does it have the impact of “the main character dies”, but it also sets up a clear flag beforehand that says “one is dead“, so that the reader could think “What? Who?”.

In addition, after the death and resurrection of Yuji Itadori, various elements are included as if they were folding.

In particular, Gojo’s battle with Jogo, in which he showed his overwhelming strength was very exciting.

And from this point on, the number of fans increased.

Then came the appearance of the Kyoto school members, the exchange meeting, and now the manga and the anime are both doing very well.

[Jujutsu Kaisen] Yuji Itadori’s death again! (Vol. 16, chapter 141)

After the Shibuya Incident, Japan is in turmoil, and in the 137th chapter of the 16th volume of the manga, Yuta Okkotsu is appointed as the executioner of Yuji Itadori.

And then a fierce battle ensues between Yuji and Okkotsu. Yuji fights well against Okkotsu, who is a special-grade shaman, but in the 141st chapter of the 16th volume of the manga, Okkotsu activates the technique “Rika“.

Then Okkotsu carelessly stabs Yuji in the heart.

This is the second time that Yuji has died in the story of Jujutsu Kaisen.

[Jujutsu Kaisen] Yuji Itadori dies and is revived again! (Vol. 17, chapter 143)

Although he died in the battle with Yuta Okkotsu, he was resurrected for the second time in chapter 143 of volume 17 of the manga.

This is because when Yuta Okkotsu stabbed Yuji Itadori in the heart, as soon as the heart stopped, he used the reversal technique to heal him at once and revive him once dead.

Yuta Okkotsu had heard about Yuji from Satoru Gojo beforehand, so he was on Yuji’s side from the beginning.

 

However, when he was appointed as “the executioner of Yuji Itadori“, so Yuji had to die once.

Therefore, Yuta Okkotsu performed an unconventional work, “stabbing him once in the heart to make him die, and then healing and reviving him the next moment”.
