This article describes the technique and domain expansion of the spellcaster Mai Zen’in, her strength and combat abilities.
Mai Zen’in is a student at the Kyoto magic technical college, and is the twin sister of Maki Zen’in.
Mai usually refers to herself as a “failure”, and is certainly not as talented a spellcaster as Aoi Todo, who is also a student at Kyoto.
However, Mai’s technique is unique and we can’t wait to see how she develops in the future.
Let’s take a closer look at her magic.

[Jujutsu Kaisen] A description of Mai Zen’in’s magic formula, domain development, physical strength and combat ability!
The following is an explanation of the characteristics and abilities of Zen’in Mai’s techniques, domain expansion, and other physical abilities herself.
In the battle scenes against Kugisaki and Maki at the goodwill event, Mai’s basic fighting style is to shoot the bullets from her revolver pistol with her magical power.
Due to the nature of style, Mai’s techniques are not meant to be used at will, so she uses them as a trump card.
Mai Zen’in’s technique is the “Construction Technique”.
During the battle with Maki Zen’in in chapter 42 of volume 5 of the manga, it is revealed that Mai Zen’in’s technique is the “Constructing Technique“.
The construction technique is to “create a new substance from zero” based on one’s own spell power.
As this technique creates actual matter, it does not disappear after the end of the technique.
One of the weaknesses of this technique is that it consumes a lot of spell power and is very hard on the body.
As a result, she can only make one bullet a day.
Mai Zen’in’s Domain expansion
There is no mention of Mai’s domain expansion in Jujutsu Kaisen.
If she grows up as a spellcaster in the future, she might be able to use it, but since domain expansion itself is a extremely high-level technique and consumes a huge amount of spell power, the number of people who can use it is very limited.
Even Nanamin (aka Kento Nanami) can’t use it, so it seems to require a lot of skills, spell power and sense.

The non-jujutsu abilities of Mai Zen’in
Mai’s “Constructing technique” are not something that can be used in the heat of battle, as they are very taxing on the body and consume a great deal of spell power.
As a result, her basic fighting style is to “shoot from a distance with a revolver pistol by putting spell power into the bullets“.
At the goodwill event, she showed off her shooting skills, hitting Kugisaki on the temple with a single shot from a long distance.
The power of the spell dramatically increases the range of the gun, and a person who can attack at such a long distance is strategically very valuable.
On the other hand, due to the nature of Mai’s technique and fighting style, she is not good at close combat.
In chapter 18 of volume 3 of the manga, even with Maki’s support, she was nearly knocked down by a chokeslapper by Kugisaki.
Mai is supposed to be a good close combatant compared to the average person, but as a spellcaster she’s not that good.
Also, in the 42nd chapter of the 5th volume of the manga, there is a scene where Maki closes the distance to Mai.
First of all, Maki herself has an inhuman physical ability, so it’s not good for Mai when it comes to close combat.
A revolver for bluffing about the number of bullets in a technique
Mai’s technique “Constructing technique” has very strict usage restrictions, which means that they can only be used at very limited times in battle.
And because she knows the characteristics and limitations of her technique, she uses a revolver pistol, a prey whose number of bullets is easy to understand.
In fact, in the 42nd chapter of the 5th volume of the manga, Maki closes the distance at once when Mai has fired 6 shots and tries to decide the game before she can reload.
At that time, Maki could not have foreseen the “seventh shot” that would be her trump card.
It is difficult to predict this trump card unless you know beforehand that Mai’s technique is a “Constructing technique”, which makes it a particularly effective strategy in one-on-one combat.
In the battle with Maki, she used rubber bullets for safety, and Maki did the unhuman thing of picking up the bullets with her hands, but if Mai had shooted real bullets, Maki would have won.
[Jujutsu Kaisen] The strength of Mai Zen’in’s formulas and his ability as a sorcerer
So far, we have explained the characteristics of the “Constructing technique” of Mai Zen’in and her fighting style.
There are many different types of sorcerers, such as those who focus entirely on power and durability, like Yuji Itadori, or those who summon shikigami, like Megumi Fushiguro.
So, although the characteristics of the technique and the style of the fight will have a great influence on the battle, the basis of strength is the ability of the spellcaster as indicated by the grade.
As for the grade, there are some exceptions like Maki, who is “always 4th grade” because of outside interference (=harassment), but it is also true that there is a stable strength of at least 1st grade shaman or above.
Let’s take a closer look at how good Mai is as a spellcaster, based on the descriptions in the work.
Mai Zen’in is a third-class sorceress
In the 38th chapter of the 5th volume of the manga, it was revealed in Panda’s list that the grade of Mai Zen’in is “3rd grade“.
A third level spellcaster is the same grade as Kugisaki and Miwa, and the standard of their ability is “it is normal to beat a third grade curse” and also “it is hard to beat a second grade curse“.
3rd grade spellcasters are not allowed to work alone, and only second level spellcasters and above are allowed to work alone.
Therefore, Mai’s grade of ability is that of a normal student of a technical college.
Mai Zen’in and Maki Zen’in were maids in the Zentoin family
In the 42nd chapter of the 5th volume of the manga, Maki and Mai’s past is described.
Maki and Mai were born into the Zen’in family, one of the biggest families of the society of shaman.
But Maki had no magic power and Mai had no talent, so they were forced to be a maid even though they were born into the Zen’in family.
The Zen’in family is one of the three families that believes in the supremacy of merit, so a child like Maki, who doesn’t even have magic power, is not even treated as a human being.
As a spellcaster, Mai also did not have any outstanding talent, so she had a difficult childhood, too.
Mai Zen’in is an excellent sniper.
As a 3rd grade spellcaster, Mai is still a novice of the spellcaster society at large.
However, as mentioned above, she is an excellent marksman, and by putting magic power into her bullets, she is able to dramatically increase their range, so that she can attack opponents at great distances.
As well as her accuracy, she will be a very useful strategic sniper as she grows and develops.
[Jujutsu Kaisen] What would happen if the spell-casting Mai Zen’in mastered the construction technique? What is her potential?
So far, we have explained the characteristics of Mai Zen’in’s technique, her combat abilities and strength as a spellcaster.
Mai’s technique, “Constructing Technique“, creates matter from nothing, which is unique among the techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen.
It’s biggest weakness is its limited use due to the huge amount of spell power it consumes, but if Mai grows as a spellcaster and overcomes this weakness to some extent, it could be used in a variety of interesting ways.
At the moment, Mai can only generate one bullet per day, but if this were to become almost unlimited, it would be possible to create a machine gun that never runs out of bullets.
Also, If she can overcome the limitations of the technique, she can create shields and armor to guard against physical attacks.
Conclusion of “[Jujutsu Kaisen] Mai Zen’in’s technique, domain development, strength and combat abilities!”
In this article, we have explained the techniques and domain expansion of Mai Zen’in, the spell caster, as well as her strength and combat abilities.
In the story, she is not a strong character, due to the harsh treatment she receives in the Zen’in family and her own self-deprecation.
However, her ability to create matter from nothing, the “Constructing Technique”, is a rare ability in the series.
And she is a character whose future development is something to look forward to.
