Broadly speaking, they can be divided into “sorcerers”, “curse users, “cursed spirits” and “incarnated humans”, and their strength is indicated by their grade.

[Jujutsu Kaisen] The difference in strength between the grade/class of sorcerers and cursed spirits!
In the 21st chapter of the third volume of the manga, assistant director Kiyotaka Ijichi explained the difference in strength between the grades of “sorcerers” and “cursed spirits”. The grades are counted from the bottom and range from 4th to special.
Both grades are called as the same way, so it is easy to confuse them, but the nuance of strength is slightly different, basically “if the same grade, the sorcerer is stronger“.
For example, a 2nd-grade sorcerer is basically stronger than a 2nd-grade cursed spirit.
Because the grade is determined on the basis that “a 2nd grade sorcerer should beat a 2nd grade cursed spirit“, and therefore it is possible for a 2nd grade sorcerer to beat a 1st grade cursed spirit.
And “Special grade sorcerer” is absolutely strong, so there are only four of these in Japan.
They are the only ones who have the talent, years of training and experience to achieve this grade.
However, since the grade is only an “indicator of strength”, political power is also involved in terms of power in the jujutsu world.
How can I raise my rank and grade?
In order to rise through the ranks of the sorcerers, they must be recommended by other sorcerers.
However, there is a limit to the number of sorcerers who can be recommended, for example, a homeroom teacher cannot recommend a student in his class (so Gojo Satoru cannot recommend Eugene Toratane, Megumi Fushiguro, or Kugisaki Nozara for promotion).
Incidentally, apart from the special classes, the promotion to first class spellcaster is the toughest, and most spellcaster head off at semi-first or second class. In order to be promoted to First Class, you must go through the following process
- Upon receiving recommendations from two or more 1st grade sorcerers
- That person accompany an active 1st-grade or similar-level sorcerer on several missions.
- If that person is deemed worthy, they will be granted to semi-1st grade.
- Then they are assigned a 1st grade mission to complete independently.
- Based on the outcome of that mission, the decision to grant or deny 1st grade status will be determined.
The missions of a 1st grade are very dangerous, as there is a great possibility that they will be fighting with a special grade cursed spirits.
As a 1st grade sorcerer is appointed to these extremely dangerous assignments, their position and salary are far higher than those of a semi-1st grade sorcerer.
[Jujutsu Kaisen] What is the difference between sorcerers and curse users? Are the criteria for grade/class the same?
In Jujutsu Kaisen, there are two terms: “sorcerer” and “curse user“. Both of them use cursed techniques, both of them have the same classification, but they have completely different social positions.
The term “sorcerer” refers to those who deal with incidents caused by curses, which occur daily. In Japan alone, more than 10,000 people have died or gone missing due to curses, and there is no end to the damage caused by curses.
On the other hand, there are people who use cursed techniques to kill people or commit evil deeds, and such vicious people are called “curse user“.
There is a set of rules for jujutsu world, and if a sorcerer violates these rules, he or she is recognised as a “curse user” and is subject to execution by the jujutsu world.
Therefore, it is necessary to clearly distinguish between a “sorcerer” and a “curse user“.
