Aoi Todo stands out as a famous character and a creepy character among all the characters of Jujutsu Kaisen.
However, his strength as a shaman is marverous, and he is undoubtedly the strongest of the Kyoto technical school, and one of the best, even including the Tokyo school.
On the other hand, there are many mysteries about Todo’s past and how he became a sorcerer.
We’ll start with the episodes from Todo’s past that have been revealed in the main story.

[Jujutsu Kaisen] What is the past of Aoi Todo in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Aoi Todo first appeared in the manga in the 16th chapter of the 2nd volume, when he came to the Tokyo technical school to greet the students before the exchange meeting (i.e. to fight).
After that, through the fight with Yuji Itadori at the exchange meeting, his character became more and more eccentric and his past was revealed a little.
Let’s take a closer look at Aoi Todo’s past.
The reason why Aoi Todo became a shaman is because of Yuki Tsukumo.
In the 50th chapter of the 6th volume of the manga, there is a little story about a past episode when Aoi Todo was in the 3rd grade student of primary school.
At that time, Aoi Toudou beat up a high school boy and made him faint even though he was in the 3rd grade.
It seems that he had extraordinary physical ability from that time.
Yuki Tsukumo, who was watching the fight from the other side of the river, said
What’s your type of woman?
Apo Todo seems to have started her journey as a sorcerer after his encounter with Yuki Tsukumo.
Aoi Todo has been inscribed with the innate technique from his past
In the 12th chapter of the 2nd volume of the manga, when Satoru Gojo is giving a spell lecture to Yuji Itadori, he also mentions a technique.
To use a spell power, a technique should be engraved on your body from birth, and conversely, if you don’t have a technique engraved on you, you can’t use magic spell.
Aoi Todo’s technique is called “Boogie Woogie” and it involves switching the positions of people, curses and objects with magical powers.
So although Todo was born a non-shaman, his body was engraved with the innate technique.
In addition to having the physical ability to beat up a high school student in the third grade student of primary school, he also had a technique engraved on his body, which means that he was an outstanding spellcaster.
Was the large scar on Aoi Todo’s face caused by a battle with curses in the past?
Aoi Todo has a large scar on the left half of her face.
This scar was not there in the reminiscence scene when he was in the third grade student of primary schools, so it seems to have been caused by a battle with a curse spirit or a curse maker after he became a sorcerer.
However, the story of how he got this scar is not told in the book.
Incidentally, Utahime Iori, who was in charge of leading the Kyoto school to the exchange meeting, also has a big scar on her face.
The scar was probably caused by a battle with a spell in the past.
Utahime Iori did not have this scar when she was a student at the technical college, so we can see how severe the battles with the cursed spirits and curse users were.
The past before becoming a first class shaman
While it is said that most spellcasters stop at the quasi-1st grade or second grade, Todo is an elitist who became a 1st grade spellcaster while still a student.
Incidentally, the conditions for becoming a 1st grade sorcerer are described in the 64th chapter of volume 8 of the manga.
- To be nominated by two or more first-grade shamans.
- Perform a number of missions with an active 1st-grade or 1st-grade equivalent shaman.
- If you are judged to be suitable, you will be promoted to quasi-1st grade.
- Then you will be assigned for the mission of 1st grade.
Todo also went through this process to become a 1st grade shaman.
Incidentally, in the past, Todo was very active for “Night parade of a hundred demons” in Shinjuku & Kyoto that Suguru Geto caused in Jujutsu Kaisen volume 0.
Todo has exorcised 5 first grade curses and 1 special grade curse, and probably exorcised countless cursed spirits of the 2nd grade and below.
You can see that Aoi Todo is an excellent shaman anyway.
Is he a junior high school classmate of Yuji Itadori?
In the 35th chapter of the 5th volume of the manga, Aoi Todo asks Yuji Itadori, “What’s your type of woman?“.
Then Yuji Itadori replies “A tall girl with big butt, I guess”, Todo’s brain is flooded with memories of his time with Yuji in junior high school.
From this point on, Todo considers Yuji to be his best friend from junior high school, but this is a “non-existent memory“, so Todo and Yuji’s junior high school days are unrelated of course.
It’s like a horror movie considering talking about a past that doesn’t exist lol.
[Jujutsu Kaisen] The relationship between Aoi Todo and Yuta Okkotsu! Did they fight against each other in the past?
There is a description of Aoi Todo looking at Yuta Okkotsu as a rival (e.g. chapter 16 of volume 2 of the manga, chapter 17 of volume 3 of the manga).
We don’t know much about this in the manga, but we will explain what happened between Aoi Todo and Yuta Okkotsu in the past.
In the past, Yuta Okkotsu participated in the exchange meeting as a number.
In this story, Yuta Okktsu is a second year student, but when Yuta was a first year student, he participated in the exchange meeting as a number.
In a normal competition, the second and third year students from the Tokyo and Kyoto schools compete against each other competition.
But if a senior student is on a mission or suspended from school, a first year student substitutes for him.
In the main story, the third-year students in Tokyo school were suspended and Yuta Okkotsu was overseas, so the first-year students Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki participated in the tournament.
The Tokyo school won by the power of “Rika Orimoto”!
In the 32nd chapter of the 4th volume of the manga, there is a small description of the exchange meeting one year ago.
It is said that the Tokyo school won the game with a great performance by Yuta Okkotsu, who only came out to match the number of members.
Because it was still before the special grade curse “Rika Orimoto” was lifted.
Aoi Todo was also on the Kyoto school side at that time, but I think he was defeated by Yuta Okkotsu and Rika Orimoto.
Because of this past, Todo is strangely hostile to Yuta in this story.
[Jujutsu Kaisen] Aoi Todo and Yuki Tsukumo’s past
As I mentioned at the beginning, Aoi Todo became a sorcerer because he was approached by Yuki Tsukumo in the past.
The episode after they met is not told in detail, but here is a summary of the past information as far as it is known in the main story.
When Aoi Todo was a primary school student, he met Yuki Tsukumo, a special grade shaman.
Aoi Todo met a special grade shaman, Yuki Tsukumo, in the past and became a spellcaster as Yuki’s apprentice.
Yuki herself is a mysterious character in the book, but she is one of only four special grade spellcasters in Japan (three after Geto’s death) and is terribly strong.
The reason why Aoi Todo became a 1st class spellcaster while he was still in school, even though he doesn’t come from a family of spellcaster, is not only his talent but also Yuki Tsukumo’s education.
Aoi Todo’s speech is influenced by Yuki Tsukumo.
Aoi Todo’s question to his new comer, “What’s your type of woman?“, this question is influenced by Yuki Tsukumo.
Yuki Tsukumo also asks this question when she meets Aoi Todo for the first time (although he was just third grade student of primary school), and she also asks the same question when he meets Suguru Geto (manga vol. 9, episode 76).
The fact that Aoi Todo copies this line shows his respect for Yuki Tsukumo.
Aoi Todo smells good! Is his grooming influenced by Yuki Tsukumo?
In the free space in chapter 35 of volume 5 of the manga, you can find a brief profile of Aoi Todo.
- In fact, he is very careful about his appearance.
- He never fails to treat his hair and sweat.
- He always takes a shower before going to Takada-chan’s handshake event.
- He always smells good. (All girls in Kyoto school say, “It’s annoying.”)
Todo’s usual behavior and the fact that he always wears no clothes on top of his body give the impression that he has a severe body odor, but in fact the opposite is true.
It is unclear whether this is due to the influence of his teacher, Yuki Tsukumo, or to the fact that he is addicted to Takada-chan.
[Jujutsu Kaisen] Aoi Todo and Mei Mei are good friends? What is their past?
Aoi Todo is hated by both the Tokyo and Kyoto school members, as shown during the baseball game in chapter 54 of volume 7 of the manga.
So the only student who has a relatively decent relationship with the school is Yuji Itadori, and the only other person who seems to have a good relationship with Todo is Mei Mei.
Here we will talk about Todo and Mei Mei’s relationship and past.
Aoi Todo and Mei Mei are first grade shaman
Aoi Todo and Mei Mei are both first class shaman and are very strong shaman in the main story.
In the 63rd chapter of the 8th volume of the manga, they recommended the following students to the Principal of the Kyoto School, Yoshinobu Gakuganji, to become first class shamans.
- Maki Zen’in
- Panda
- Megumi Fushiguro
- Nobara Kugisaki
- Yuji Itadori
By the way, just before this, there is a description that Mei Mei received a transfer of 10 million yen from Satoru Gojo, so the reason for the recommendation story is Gojo’s bribe.
Whether or not Aoi Todo was also bribed, he probably had some kind of influence on him.
This is because Todo would have recommended Yuji without being told, but he would not have been interested in anyone else at all.
Aoi Todo and Mei Mei’s Table Tennis Scene
After the recommendation to become a first class shaman, in the 64th chapter of volume 8 of the manga, there is a scene where Aoi Todo and Mei Mei are playing table tennis.
While playing ping-pong, Todo still only talks about Yuji Itadori, but they call each other “Ms. Mei” and “Mr. Toudou”, which is rare among the characters in Jujutsu Kaisen who can have a proper conversation with Todo.
The past episodes of Aoi Todo and Mei Mei have not been revealed, but it seems that they have become like comrades-in-arms through their missions.
It seems that Mei Mei is one of the few people who understands Todo, as he doesn’t even listen to the principal, Yoshinobu Gakuganji.
[Jujutsu Kaisen] Is Aoi Todo a mastermind?
So far, we have talked about Aoi Todo’s past and the people who are related to her.
Both Yuki Tsukumo and Mei Mei, the shamans that Aoi Todo has been in contact with so far, are quite mysterious characters in the story.
Yuki, in particular, is following his own path, which is completely different from the policy of the magic technical college, and he also said something to Geto that caused his to go out of control, so it is not clear whether she is an enemy or not.
Aoi Todo is a technical college student, so of course he should be on the side of the technical college, but it will be interesting to see what happens next.
Conclusion of “[Jujutsu Kaisen] Aoi Todo’s past and his relationship with Yuta Okkotsu and Yuki Tsukumo!”
In this article, I explained the past of Aoi Todo, a famous character in Jujutsu Kaisen, and his relationship with Yuta Okkotsu, Yuki Tsukumo, and Mei Mei.
When Todo first appeared in the story, he seemed like a muscular gorilla with a bare upper body who talked about things that made no sense, but after his interactions with Yuji Itadori, he became a very important character.
His past may be told in more detail in the future.
